Dr. Keith Lehman was born and raised in the Vegreville, Alberta area prior to moving onto post-secondary education. He graduated from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture in 1994 and then from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in 1999. After starting his professional career in mixed animal practice, he transitioned to the federal government with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency serving in several roles including a brief secondment to Agriculture and Agri-food Canada’s Market Access Secretariat. In 2014, Dr. Lehman moved from the federal government to Alberta Agriculture and Forestry and after two years, was appointed as Alberta’s Chief Provincial Veterinarian.
Dr. Lehman served as chair of the Council of Chief Veterinary Officers for two years (2017 and 2018). He also serves as an ex-officio member of the Alberta Veterinary Medical Association, as a member of the University of Calgary Veterinary Medicine Strategic Advisory Committee, and represents the Council of Chief Veterinary Officers on the National Farmed Animal Health and Welfare Council.
