Dr. Hugh Whitney


Former CVO for Newfoundland and Labrador

Dr. Hugh Whitney served as the Chief Veterinary Officer (CVO) for Newfoundland and Labrador from 1985 to 2015, initially holding the title of Provincial Veterinarian. During this time, he modernized legislation related to animal health, milk quality, and animal welfare, while also developing a strong team of professionals in these fields.

Dr. Whitney holds a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture from McGill University, a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Université de Montréal, a Master of Science in Veterinary Microbiology from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine, and a Master of Arts in History from Memorial University.

His key accomplishments include participating in two successful rabies eradication programs in Newfoundland and contributing to The Adventures of Uapikun, an educational series for Innu schools in Labrador. He also supported university-based research in animal diseases and mentored students interested in veterinary medicine.

Dr. Whitney concludes his career with the simple wish that those who follow do their best with the time they have and offers his best to the current members of the CCVO.
