Former CVO for Alberta, 2008-2016

Dr. Gerald Hauer is a retired Doctor of Veterinary Medicine with a degree from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in Saskatoon and a Master’s in Veterinary Public Health Management from Sydney University. He served as Chief Veterinary Officer (CVO) for eight years, during which time he was a strong advocate for the integration of animal and human health under the One Health concept.

Dr. Hauer was one of the original board members of the National Farmed Animal Health and Welfare Council, an organization that later evolved into Animal Health Canada. His early work on the council laid the foundation for many of the animal health programs now in place across the country. Though promoting cooperation between animal and human health professionals during his time as CVO proved challenging, Dr. Hauer remains committed to the belief that strong relationships between these fields are essential for the well-being of both animals and people.
